La Cometa: 40 years
Between heaven and earth

«There are things in life that you only understand when you look back.
My journey with art began long before La Cometa existed. It began in my parents’ home, where my siblings and I grew up surrounded by conversations, poetry, and a unique sensibility towards life.

Perhaps that’s where that curiosity that has never left me was born. I found in art a way to stay close to what moved me and to the questions I asked myself. Then came life. And amid so many things that were taking shape, the possibility arose to build something, without really knowing how far I might go.

I’ve always liked to think of kites as more than just objects that fly. There is something profoundly beautiful in that fragile structure, made of simple materials, that can reach unimaginable heights. In that relationship between the wind that propels it and the string that holds it up. In the trust of the person who, from below, dares to let out a little more string.

And so, almost without realizing it, we began to fly. And I say “we” because I’ve never been alone on this adventure. Over the course of these forty years, many people have been a part of it.

Forty years later, with everything I know today and everything I’ve experienced, I would choose this path all over again. Because my greatest fortune has not been seeing how far La Cometa has come, but discovering how many lives have made its flight possible.
And when people ask me where we are after all this time, I don’t have to think too hard about it.
We are between heaven and earth».

A new gateway opens onto the artist’s visual universe, intimate in origin. La Noche emerges from the dimness of the screening rooms to the blackness of the charcoal with which he aludes to the cartography of eroded territories and autobiographical poetics.

Castro articulates the «vandal» gesture as a means of intervention rooted in traditional craft, using beadwork and basketry, to renew a critique, consistent throughout his work, of colonial monuments and their persistence in our imaginary of historical heroism as a field open to revision.
