EXHIBITION LA COMETA MIAMI

La Cometa Miami proudly presents Only Lovers, an exhibition by Cuban, Madrid-based artist Glenda León. The show, which features a selection of installations, sculptures and altered photographs will be open from November 30th, 2024 to January 30th, 2025.

In a world defined by divisions—between nations, humans and nature, and even within ourselves—we often lose sight of the profound interconnectedness that unites us. These constructed separations, reinforced by national policies and societal norms, perpetuate disconnection and suffering. Cuban artist Glenda León (Havana, 1976) challenges these boundaries, inviting us to reimagine a world without them.

Through her thought-provoking works, León sheds light on the experience of Cuban immigrants in Miami. She explores how an imagined Havana emerges in the heart of a new city—where homes, businesses, and restaurants mimic their Cuban origins, creating an illusory dual presence: simultaneously in Miami and Havana, or perhaps in neither.

Amid the pain of separation—of leaving homes, families, and loved ones, and the tragedies of those who perish seeking a new life—León finds inspiration in the philosophy of Félix González-Torres. His personal journey, marked by profound separation, ultimately embraced the healing power of love.

León’s work is an act of healing. It transcends the constructed barriers and reminds us that the path of love is the ultimate route to understanding, unity, and solace.

Nowadays it seems that our source for inspiration has drastically changed. We no longer find the same fascination in natural elements, but rather in objects and products pushed by consumerism. In my work ‘Landscape’ this transformation manifests in a provocative and self-evident manner. The title itself ‘Landscape’ plays with the traditional perception of the world to insinuate a new direction: our contemporary horizon is characterized by merchandise and consumables.

MIGUEL ANGEL ROJAS AT MIRROR OF THE MIND: FIGURATION IN THE JORGE PÉREZ COLLECTION AT Espacio 23.

December 2nd, 6 – 9 pm

Espacio 23

2270 NW 23rd St.

Mirror of the Mind explores the entangled, inseparable relationship between the physical and emotional aspects of the body. This exhibition brings together more than 120 artists who use figuration and portraiture to examine the complexities of the human condition: the power of perception, the weight of trauma, the possibilities for healing, the space for introspection, the sense of belonging, and the impact on the flesh.

The exhibition is co-curated by Patricia Hanna and Anelys Alvarez from El Espacio 23/ Jorge M. Pérez Collection.
